CHAPTER THIRTEEN

AFTER REEF WENT OUTSIDE, Evie piled cookies, brownies and berries on a tray for Ellen to bring upstairs. She’d assumed her “perky mom” facade, the kind of mom who didn’t come this close to making out with an alien in the living room, who didn’t fantasize about shoving him into the guest bedroom later, stripping naked and throwing herself at the hot man sleeping in the bed.

“You like him.”

Evie hesitated for a fraction of a second before adding the last berry. “What’s not to like? Agent Sanders is a very nice man.”

“Nice as in—” Ellen waggled her eyebrows “—Nice, right? Hot.”

“He’s our bodyguard. Keeping a totally professional relationship supersedes any attraction I might have for him.”

“Whatever.”

It didn’t sound like Ellen believed a word she’d said. Only one problem with that: neither did Evie.

Ellen took the tray from her hands. “I thought you didn’t like us eating by the computers.”

“Let’s just say that tonight I feel like letting a few rules slide.” She kissed Ellen and gave her a little shove toward the stairs.

Evie grabbed a bottle of wine, two clean glasses and a platter of Evie’s Eden berries. Shoving open the back door with her bare foot, she scampered down the stairs.

She wanted to finish that kiss, damn it.

All her life she’d sacrificed for others, especially her kids. She loved them to pieces, but there came a point where “Mom” had to draw the line. She needed that kiss, and she was going to get it, too. Judging from the way Reef had looked at her when they were in the kitchen, she expected no arguments.

This is so not like you, Evie.

True. It was like the old her: the old self she’d wrapped up and put in storage after high school with the intent of throwing it away, but never quite having the heart to do it. It was as if a part of her always knew she’d want to take that old Evie out again, dust it off to look at and remember before putting it back on the shelf.

Her cover-up fluttered behind her as she walked across the lawn to the pool. The night was warm and dry. Frogs in the greenbelt behind the house belted out mating calls. The perfect background music, she thought, feeling predatory.

It was dark already, but there was enough light from the underwater pool lights to see. Where was Reef? His towel was flung over a chair, as well as his t-shirt. She walked closer to the pool. There, under the surface, a long, dark form glided, silent and sleek, from one side of the pool to the other.

She arranged the wine and berries at the water’s edge and slipped her cover-up off her shoulders, dropping it onto a lounge chair. Underwater, Reef touched the opposite wall and flipped, gliding back across the pool.
